Neutral Tone Realization in Tianjin Mandarin
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study examines the acoustic realization of neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin, which shows great variability in the f0 patterns. Previous studies, mainly with impressionistic data, have proposed that the neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin has different underlying tonal targets depending on the tonal contexts, in particular the following tone. This presents a great challenge to the crossdialectal understanding of neutral tone realization in the Mandarin family. With well-controlled laboratory speech, we show that the f0 contours over the neutral tone syllable can be predicted from the neighboring lexical tones and much of the f0 variation can be explained by factors that are known to affect lexical tone realization, namely, tone sandhi, focus, and tonal coarticulation.

Acoustic realization of Mandarin neutral tone and tone sandhi in infant-directed speech and Lombard speech.
Mandarin lexical tones are modified in both infant-directed speech (IDS) and Lombard speech, resulting in tone hyperarticulation. However, it is unclear if these registers also alter contextual tones (neutral tone and tone sandhi) and if such phonetic modification might affect acquisition of these tones. This study therefore examined how neutral tone and tone sandhi are realized in IDS, and how...
متن کاملTrisyllabic Tone Sandhi in Tianjin Mandarin
Tianjin Mandarin is known for its complex tone sandhi patterns over bisyllabic constituents and the conflicting directionality as well as the possible iterative application of sandhi rules over trisyllabic constituents. Previous studies on Tianjin tone sandhi, especially those on sandhi in trisyllabic sequences, have been mainly based on impressionistic descriptions. In this paper, we argue tha...
متن کاملTianjinese Lexical Tone, Tone Sandhi, and Prosody: Amplitude-f0 Dependency under Prominence in Mandarin
In Tianjin Mandarin, f0 and amplitude track together on low (L) tone T1, low rising (LH) tone T3, and high falling (HL) tone T4, as is claimed to be true generally of Standard Mandarin (see Yip 2002). In contrast, lexical high tone T2 f0 tracks least systematically with amplitude, whereas tonesandhi derived high tones on T3 and T2 co-vary with amplitude most consistently. The tone sandhi induce...
متن کاملA Comparative Study on Tone Realization in Cantonese-Accented Mandarin and Standard Mandarin
The paper investigates tone realization in monosyllabic and disyllabic words in Cantonese, Cantonese-spoken Mandarin and Standard Mandarin, focusing on the deviations of tone realization in Cantonese-spoken Mandarin from standard Mandarin in monosyllabic and disyllabic words. The analysis on monosyllabic and disyllabic tone patterns shows that most of the tone deviations in Cantonese-accented M...
متن کاملMandarin Neutral Tone—does it Change Target
It is known that in Mandarin each of the five lexical tones can be assigned with an articulatorily functional target: [high] for tone 1, [rise] for tone 2, [low] for tone 3, [fall] for tone 4 and [mid] for tone 5 (the first four tones are known as full tones while tone 5 is called neutral tone). Given that the targets of full tones can change (e.g., from tone 3 to tone 2) in certain speech cond...
